L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc.has been awarded a renewal contract valued at approximately $8 million USD from the Latvia Road Traffic Safety Directorate to produce licenses for automobile drivers and pleasure watercraft operators. The contract was awarded through the Secure Credentialing division of L-1 and extends from February 2009 through December 31, 2012.

The previous contract period of 2004-2009 supplied new hardware, software and consumables from L-1 that was required when Latvia joined the European Union (EU). This contract renewal provides maintenance and consumables.

"L-1 is recognized as the premier provider of secure credentialing solutions and they have worked diligently with us over the last few years since the introduction of our European Union style Driver's License in the enrollment, personalization and production of our license issuance system," said Juris Teteris at the Latvia Road Traffic and Safety Directorate. "We rely greatly on their team and the solutions they offer meet our needs thoroughly."

L-1 has partnered with the Latvian government since 1993, using its technology to produce nearly two million secure credentials for the country. During the new contract renewal term, Latvia expects to use L-1 systems to personalize and produce more than 600,000 driver's licenses and permits and 10,000 inland waters pleasure craft operator's licenses. The increase in license issuance in Latvia during this new contract term is due to a variety of factors, including a significant number of new applications and a large number of anticipated renewals.

"The L-1 team has built a close partnership with Latvia over the last 15 years and during that time we have focused on earning their trust and respect by providing superior solutions and exceptional customer service," said Leo Sullivan, President of the Secure Credentialing Division of L-1 Identity Solutions. "Including our work in Latvia, nearly a billion secure credentials have been produced to date globally using L-1 solutions, ranging from driver's licenses to passports."
